For many years, I believed that good skin cleansing had to feel strong. The rougher the scrub, the better the result. That was my logic for a long time. I used scrubs with large particles, rough sponges, and even face brushes. Sometimes I finished with an alcohol toner because I thought that clean skin had to feel dry and tight.
Now I understand that my skin was simply trying to survive all of that.
I used scrubs regularly from my early twenties. I thought they cleaned my pores well and helped my skin renew itself faster. Sometimes I even felt proud when my skin felt so "clean" that it almost squeaked after washing.
But over time, the problems became obvious.
Closer to thirty, I noticed dark spots that stayed on my face much longer than before. My skin became more sensitive. Redness appeared more often. Breakouts did not go away. At some point I started thinking that maybe the problem was not only my skin, but also the way I was treating it.
At that time, I did not fully understand that constant rubbing can injure the skin and weaken its protective barrier. Later I learned that dark spots can appear after repeated irritation, especially if the skin is not protected well from the sun.
Recovering from that took time, money, and patience. That was when I started looking more closely at gentler ways to remove dead skin cells.
One day I came across a peeling gel. It is a soft gel that rolls into small flakes during massage and helps lift away oil, dirt, and some dead skin cells from the surface.
I did not expect much. But after the first few uses, I realized this was exactly what my skin had been missing.
For my combination skin, it felt much calmer and more comfortable than harsh scrubs. My skin felt smoother and fresher, but not scratched or overworked.
With time, I understood one simple but important thing: effective cleansing does not have to be aggressive. Sometimes skin does better when we stop attacking it and start treating it with more care.
Now I use a peeling gel about once or twice a week. That is enough to keep my skin smoother without putting too much stress on it.
Looking back, my main mistake was confusing intensity with effectiveness. My skin did not need stronger tools. It needed a calmer routine.
Mistakes I Made While Cleansing My Skin
1. I cleaned too aggressively
I believed that a stronger scrub meant better cleansing. In reality, constant friction only irritated my skin and made it more reactive over time.
2. I used scrubs too often
I used them regularly and did not think about recovery time. Little by little, my skin barrier became weaker.
3. I thought "tight skin" meant "clean skin"
When my skin felt very dry after washing, I thought the product was working well. Now I know that this was a sign that my skin was losing comfort and moisture.
After making these mistakes for years, I finally changed my approach. Now I try to treat my skin much more gently.
Rules I Follow Now
1. I use peeling gel gently
Even gentle products can become a problem if you use them too often or rub the skin for too long. I keep the massage short and do not try to force a stronger effect.
2. I moisturize my skin after peeling
After gentle peeling, the skin is more ready to absorb care. I always apply a moisturizing cream or serum afterward.
3. I protect my skin from the sun
After any kind of peeling, the skin becomes more sensitive. That is why daily sun protection matters even more. It helps lower the risk of new dark spots.
Today my skin care routine is much softer and much more thoughtful. I choose products that work with my skin, not against it.
And honestly, my skin looks much better because of that.
